Whatever you give (Day 5)
Reading: Luke 10:35 ESV
‘And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’
As a young Christian, you’d have found me slouching down in the pugh when the Pastor did his bi-annual tithing preach. It was as sure as the autumn AGM and I wasn’t much for it either. I have since had a change in heart to giving (and to the AFM!) but it still does not come so easily to me. I am constantly being schooled in how to keep my hand relaxed and open.
We can so easily misunderstand the exciting principle of giving or spending as Jesus teaches in this parable and this is a story that never gets old! Its truth outlasts the time it was set in and the characters in the scene, we still find deep within ourselves to this day.
In today’s scripture, I find Jesus alive in the person of the Samaritan. Jesus calls us to a life well spent. A heart surrendered to giving to the Kingdom and in a very practical sense. We are of no good to the poor if we only bless them and send them on their way and of no use to the lost if we only point vaguely in the direction of home and not offer to walk with them there.
Have confidence that whatever you give in His name, He will ‘repay you when He comes back.’
What does that mean for you right now in this moment? Have you time to sacrifice, money to pay for someone’s coffee or even a bed to loan?
I find it a great test between you and Jesus, if you can say out loud and unequivocally to Him, ‘whatever you ask me to spend, donate or invest – I will.’
I dare you to trust God with me and truly believe and not doubt He will never leave you poorer when you give Him your whatever.
